£576m in payday loans to pay for funerals

2.7 million have had to borrow to pay for a funeral. How would your family cope?

The incredible cost of funerals means that one in four people landed with the bill after a loved one passes away have ended up having to take out some kind of loan to pay for it.

Some people are able to borrow from family and friends, while others have been able to use personal loans. However, plenty more have had to turn to expensive credit cards, and a worrying 1.2 million people have borrowed a total of £576 million from payday loan companies.

What can you do?

If you have enough cash to set aside for your own funeral, it can make an enormous difference to those who will already be grieving when they hear the bad news about how much your funeral will set them back. This is why at Hatfield Daniels LLP we are championing and promoting funeral plans to all clients as an ethical, affordable solution to this problem.

Whether you are paying in full or looking to spread your costs with monthly payments, there has never been a better time to put a funeral plan in place through Hatfield Daniels LLP.

Choose a payment option to suit your pocket

Paying in full with one payment

Who is it for: Anyone over 18 yrs of age

When you pay in full for your plan, you will receive immediate cover giving you complete peace of mind. You can pay by credit or debit card.

There is a 30-day money back guarantee should you change your mind.

Add additional features to your funeral plan, perhaps to reflect your personality or interests. These can include ‘green’ elements such as biodegradable cardboard coffins, unusual vehicles such as Land Rovers or motorbikes, or additional musicians, for example.

When you are ready you can apply over, the telephone or request a brochure and application form.

Pay over 12 months with no additional charges or pay a deposit & the balance later

Who is it for: Anyone over 18 yrs of age

When you are ready you can apply over, the telephone or request a brochure and application form.

Spread your costs up to 30 years from £18.63 a month

There are 2 types of monthly payment options; the first is a “Low Cost Instalment Plan” and the other is known as a “Fixed Monthly Payment Plan”.

Low Cost Instalment Plan

Who is it for: Anyone aged 18 to 78 yrs

When you are ready you can apply over, the telephone or request a brochure and application form.

Whilst not a funeral plan Over 50 life insurance could help with funeral costs from £3.90 month

Who is it for: Anyone aged 50 to 85 yrs of age

Monthly payments start from £3.90 a month and are payable for life, which means that you could pay more in than the cash sum paid out.

Funeral insurance may be of interest to those who prefer to keep to a lower budget and want a cash sum to help with funeral costs, reducing the financial burden on their loved ones.

You are covered for the full cash sum after 2 years. Should you die within the first 2 years, your premiums would be returned plus half as much again, so this can still be used to help with funeral costs.

Your acceptance is guaranteed regardless of your health and lifestyle.

How safe is your money?

When you buy a prepaid funeral plan your money is invested safely in a trust fund; a completely separate entity that is independently managed and audited.

So should anything happen, your money would be reallocated to a different local funeral director.

FPAFor your added protection, all of the plans we offer are regulated by the Funeral Planning Authority (FPA).

Low Cost Instalment Plan Explained

Like a lot of things in life, when you spread your costs and make payments over a longer period you pay more for the privilege. The Golden Charter low cost instalment plan does include additional administration fees which are built into the monthly premium however you are securing your funeral director’s costs at today’s prices, which could avoid the impact of future funeral inflation.

Insts-vs-funeral-inflation-Let’s take a look at a 56-year-old taking out a Standard plan over 20 years with a £199 deposit:

The usual price when paying in full is £3,625.

The monthly payments are £23.50.

The total amount repayable will be £5,603.

Therefore, the additional charges are £1,978.

The average cost of a funeral today is £3,693 ^

Average inflation since 1980 is approx 6%. If this continues, the average cost of a funeral in 20 years could be £11,733.

As you secured your plan at today’s prices you will have saved £6,130 based on these assumptions.

What’s more, should you die during the payment period, all your payments will go towards the cost of your funeral and your loved ones will be asked to make up the difference, but at today’s prices, potentially saving them £100’s if not £1000’s.

In addition, the total cost of the plan will be recalculated at the time of your death based on the length of time you have paid into it and not the original term, so your family would not be penalized for the outstanding years.

Plus should you have difficulties in making payments during the term, you can ask Golden Charter for a ‘payment holiday’, removing the immediate financial payments for you to start again once your situation is back to normal (you just need to have completed the payment by the age of 80).

^The Sun Life Cost of Dying Report 2015 shows that average funeral costs across the UK are now £3,693 and the Royal London Funeral Cost Report 2015 stated prices have risen on average by 6.1% since 1980.

We originally approached Hatfield Daniels with regard to the free will service they were offering and then went on to instruct them with regard to lasting power of attorneys and other services which they undertake, at a reasonable cost. We would definitely recommend Daniel and Hatfield Daniels to anyone requiring this type of service.

Hatfield Daniels made it easy for us to get our wills sorted out - a job we'd been putting off for years. The whole process only took a couple of weeks and Daniel made it easy by explaining our options and listening to what what we wanted to achieve before drafting the wills. I'd thoroughly recommend Hatfield Daniels to anyone else who knows they should have a will but have never quite got round to it...
